CREATION OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT LAW
A Law to Provide for the Creation of New Local Government Areas in Lagos State.
[Commencement] [24th June 2002]
1. Creation of new Local Government Areas
(1) As from the commencement of this Law, there is established in Lagos State of Nigeria an additional 37 Local Government Areas as set out in Schedule II to this Law.

(2) The additional Local Government Areas listed in Schedule II to this Law are inchoate until such time as the National Assembly shall pass an Act to make consequential provisions with respect to the names of the said additional Local Government Areas as provided for under section 8(5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

2. Local Government Areas Part 1, Schedule I, NO.24, 1999
(1) Pending the consequential Act of the National Assembly referred to in section 1(2) of this Law:
(i) the Local Government Areas for the time being listed in Part Schedule 1 of the 1999 Constitution and in Schedule I of the Amendment Law remains valid and in existence;
(ii) all other Local Government Areas listed in Schedule II of the Amendment Law shall for the time being operate as Local Council Development Areas, the funding of which shall be borne by the State Government.

(2) The 37 Local Government 1999 and listed in new Local Government Areas are created in addition to the existing 20 Local Government Areas specified in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and listed in Schedule I to this Law.

3. Administration of the new Local Government Areas
The Governor shall have powers to appoint persons to administer the affairs of the newly created Local Government Areas and such persons shall hand over to a democratically elected Local Government Council whenever such is put in place.
4. Citation and commencement
This Law may be cited as the creation of Local Government Areas Law, 2002
