Nigeria and the African continent has universities. How did they fare in the Global Innovation Index 2018

The following are the list of universities driving patent applications and scientific publishing globally between 2012 and 2016. The list was developed as part of the Global Innovation Index 2018 which provides detailed metrics about the innovation performance of 126 countries and economies around the world.
10. University of California in San Diego, US accounting substantially (54.3%) for the 34,340 scientific applications and 18,217 patents attributed to San Diego, United States’. Chemistry, at 6.5% accounted for the majority of the publications.
9. Center National de la Recherche Scientifique, CNRS, France reputed to be the largest government research organisation in France and the largest fundamental science agency in Europe. CNRS accounted for 22,2% of the 94,073 scientific publications attributed to Paris within the period. 13,318 international applications were also filed within the same period from Paris entities. Transportation (11.6%) dominated as theme of technological study.
8. Columbia University in New York, United States accounted for 13.3% of the 129,214 scientific publications arising from New York with general and internal medicine leading the way at 6%. 12,032 international patents applications were filed from New York within the same period with Honeywell accounting for 4.7% of them.
7. Harvard University, accounted for 53.8% of the 119,240 scientific publications arising from Boston-Cambridge, United States within the period under study. The medical field of oncology (concerned with cancer) accounted for 5.9% of the publications. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, IMT, however asserted itself by accounting for 6.4% of the 13,659 patent applications made by entities in the area. Pharmaceuticals with 16.9% dominated the patent filings.
6. Kyoto University accounted for 22% of the 67,781 scientific publications connected with the trio of Osaka, Kobe, Kyoto in Japan with chemistry emerging as the main field of science as 10.2% of total publications focused on it. 27,046 international patent applications were recorded within the period out of which 10.3% were secured by Murata Manufacturing. Electrical technology at 14% pf filings made up the main field of technology.
5. Chinese Academy of Science represented Beijing on the list by accounting for 23.5% of the 197,175 scientific publications with chemistry (10.6%) as main main field of science. 18,041 international patents were filed by entities in Beijing with BOE Technology Group leading the pack with 21.1% of all filings. Digital communication was first at 25.5% of all filings.

University of California, accounted for 38.25 of the 90,238 scientific publications recorded in the San-Jose-San Francisco areas of the United States of America with Chemistry emerging as main field of scientific study at 6.65% of all publications. Google, accounted for 7.2%, of the 36,715 patent filings in San-Jose San Francisco with computer technology at 22.9% the main field of technology.
3. Seoul National University, Seoul accounted for 16.3% of the 37,118 international filings connected with South Korea’s leading city. Engineering led with 7.5% of all publications. 37,118 international patent applications were recorded by Seoul with LG Electronics accounting for 17.4% fo them. Digital communication (15.8%) was the leading field of technology for patents.
2. University of Hong Kong is credited with 18.4% of the 40,920 scientific publications connected with Shenzhen-Hong Kong, China with engineering (10.7%) as main field of science. Patent applications recorded was 48,084 with ZTE Corp accounting for 42.3% of them all.
1. University of Tokyo is the source of 13.9% of 141,584 scientific publications connected with Tokyo and Yokohama in Japan, the joint global top science and technology hotspots. Together, they accounted for 104,746 international patent applications filed – with Mitsubishi Electric in first place with 6.8% of all applications.
